Create and manage API keys

An API key connects one WordPress site to your account. Treat it like a password.

Create a key

  1. Open your dashboard

    Sign in and find Your API Keys.

  2. Click “Create New Key”

    Enter the Website URL where the key will be used; it’s required, because a key only works on that site. A Label such as “Main website” is optional and helps when you have several keys.

  3. Copy the key

    The full key is shown once. Click Copy and paste it somewhere safe, or straight into the plugin. You won’t be able to see it again; if you lose it, create a new key and delete the old one.

Keep keys private. Don’t post a key in a public forum, e-mail it around or commit it to a code repository. Anyone with your key could use your monthly replies.

How many keys you can have

Each website needs its own key. Starter and Growth cover 1 website each and Pro covers 5. If you move from Pro to a plan with fewer websites while you have more keys than it allows, the extra keys are shown as paused: over plan limit and stop working until you upgrade again or delete a key.

Edit a key

Use Edit Key to change the label or the website address, for example after moving your site to a new domain. You can also list your web server’s IP addresses under Allowed server IPs so the key only works from those servers; leave it empty unless you know your server’s addresses.

Delete a key

Deleting a key stops it working immediately, so any site using it stops answering. Create and install a replacement first if the site should stay online.
